Philadelphia City Hall
Broad and Markets streets
General Contractor: Daniel J. Keating Co.
Eastern Scaffolds started this project in 1984 with the
restoration of the clock tower. This required Eastern to start at the 300’
elevation.
Large steel I beams were cantilevered out under the cast iron
clock tower and the scaffold climbed up from there to the top of William Penn’s
hat.

In 1994 the restoration of the East portal started with the
installation of scaffolding. To allow repairs to commence. Which included
masonry repair and cleaning,
painting of the
cast iron trim. New lead gutters, and window restoration In early 2000
restoration of the courtyard and the entire tower began.
The entire
restoration of city hall will take place over several years in phases Starting in the courtyard then the tower, and moving to the east
side along the apron, just north of the east portal continuing
counter clock wise until finished. Here are some pictures of the work that is
ongoing.

As you can see in the picture above and to the left
that the round section of the tower at the base has been cleaned and restored,
which gives a good idea of the discoloration that has
taken place over the years and what the building will look like when finished.
